Are you one of the many joining the outhouse craze! Hey if you're into primitive decor, what better theme for your bathroom than an outhouse theme. Well, I joined the bandwagon, but decided I didn't want a cookie-cutter outhouse bathroom, I wanted original stuff! So I came up with this really neat idea and I thought I would share it with all my friends on the world wide web! They come out really cute and cost precious little to make!

Outhouses made from Floral Foam

What You Need:

  • Green Floral Foam and or styrofoam
  • Exacto Knife and other carving tools (forks, kitchen knives, pencils - they all work!)
  • Acrylic Paint- In atleast two neutral shades ( tan, brown, rust)
  • White Glue

How You Make It:

Depending on which shaped outhouse you want to make, cut a 3 to 4 inch block of floral foam. Then carefully trim the edges off to make a peak, either in the front or the middle. Using either a thin piece of styrofoam, or a thin slice of floral foam, cut your roof piece (two pieces if you are making the peak in the center). Then in a similar fashion, cut a small, flat rectangle for the door.

Next comes the part that adds the character! Using your carving tools, groove the sides of the main block. You can be creative with this step. Depending on your grooves, you can make it look like wood or stone. Continue your carving and put little details on your block - perhaps a moon crescent, or a star. You might want to carve a small window.

Once you are satisfied with your grooves and carving, you are ready to paint! Add a little water to your acrylic paint to make sure it is thin. The foam will absorb it quickly so you want to be able to spread it. Use the ligther color first. Cover all surfaces except where you will be gluing. Then take your darker color and lightly paint the grooves. Use a light touch. You don't want big streeks, just natural looking color changes. Once painted, allow your pieces to dry (overnight recommended).

Once dry, put some glue on the unpainted backs of your pieces and put them in their places. Allow the glue to dry. You can add all kinds of other "extras' too to make these cute outhouses really unique.
