Spice Up Your Oatmeal!

Today there is a lot of talk about the health benefits of oatmeal, but plain old oatmeal, day after day, can get really boring. Try these add-ins to give it a little zest!
  • Raisins, almonds and maple syrup (I use the sugar free kind)
  • Chopped walnuts, raisins, a dash of cinnamon and a little sugar or artificial sweetener.
  • Craisins (dried cranberries)
  • Chopped apple and walnuts.
To top it off, try adding nonfat yogurt instead of milk (I personally prefer vanilla), and if you really want a special treat, put a garnish of granola on top of that. Try my recipe for granola. It tastes great!

PENNY WISE!

How to make bread from the "Day Old" Rack taste like it is freshly baked!

If you are like me you are always looking for ways to make your money go a little further.  I have discovered a little trick for "rejuvenating" old bread.  Here's how:
First visit your local grocery store's day old rack. Pick out a nice loaf of bread (I usually choose Italian bread). The bread is usually marked down in price a substantial amount.
When you get it home, pop it in the freezer immediately. When you need a loaf of bread, simply take it out of the freezer and wrap it in aluminum foil. Then bake the loaf at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes. The time and temperature can vary, so if you are already baking something in your oven just put it in along side whatever you are baking.
When you remove the bread it will look, smell and taste like a freshly baked loaf of bread!
